Parlando tacendo: Alberto Burri (1915-1995)

One of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century, Alberto Burri consistently dismissed obvious readings of his artworks as being about the damage and trauma of World War II. But whilst refusing the verbal trivialization of his work, Burri’s art clearly speaks of a process wherein the materials and the way they are worked testify to meanings of destruction and violence. This lecture looks at Burri’s art as a journey from something terrible to something that approaches redemption, an alchemic quest shaped by the unique context of Italy in the aftermath of the war and nowhere as mournful as it superficially looks. Roberta Crisci is an art historian specialising in nineteenth and 20th-century art.
