The authorities had initially suspend flights from the airport for 48 hours but they subsequently decided activity could resume on a restricted basis given the limited nature of the damage.

ItaliaRimborso CEO Felice D’Angelo said that around 38,900 passengers use Catania airport at this time of year.

“Catania airport serves 91 destinations, of which 24 are Italian,” explained D’Angelo.

Catania was among several Italian cities that imposed a hot weather red alert on Sunday, along with the Sicilian capital of Palermo and the island’s third largest city of Messina, as the country braced for record high temperatures in the coming days.
