How does living like a local in a southern Italian village for three months sound?
Airbnb is paying for four people to move to the small village of Grottole, in the region of Basilicata, and experience authentic rural life in the Belpaese.
The four lucky temporary citizens of Grottole will have the chance to immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions during their all-expenses-paid stay.
The deal includes free accommodation, up to €900 in expenses per month and the opportunity to enrol in language courses and cookery classes.
In return, candidates will help the local community breathe life into the sleepy village, which is currently home to just 300 inhabitants and more than 600 empty houses.
Candidates will volunteer with local NGO, Wonder Grottole, which aims to regenerate the town and turn it into a vibrant cultural hub.
Grottole’s four newest citizens will help with renovating buildings, maintaining the village’s vegetable garden and hosting Airbnb Experiences, including showing visitors traditional skills like vegetable farming, honey harvesting, pasta making and olive oil production.
All proceeds from these experiences will be invested back into the village.
“Italy is an extraordinary country with a strong and vibrant rural community, countless hilltop villages and a passionate and welcoming culture,” Airbnb co-founder and chief product officer Joe Gebbia said.
“We want to help preserve these communities so they continue for generations to come.
“By inspiring and supporting others to get involved and make real contributions to village life, we hope it shines a light on the beauty of rural Italy.”
The deadline for applications is February 17 and the placement will take place from June to August.
