The biggest talking point in the first half was the red card a Melbourne Knights defender received for holding back Diaz as he ran through on goal to get on the end of a through ball.
The score stayed 0-0 at half time, but the peptalk at the break clearly worked as Cuba scored in the first minute of the second half to give the home team the lead.
Avondale FC couldn’t add a second, however, and that proved to be costly as Melbourne Knights equalised from a corner in the last minute of play to give each side a point.
The focus now moves to this week’s home game against Moreland on Saturday at 3 p.m. as The Avengers are looking to get back into the winners’ book.
It was the same old story for the Senior Women - another game another win.
Playing at Avenger Park in a game that saw the league leaders up against second-placed Mill Park in what would be a good test to see where the Senior Women really are.
Going into the match, the club knew that setting the tempo at the start was vital. And wow, did the home team set the tempo!
A five-goal onslaught in the first half saw The Avengers take a 5-0 lead into half time, and that would be the fulltime result.
The Avondale FC Senior Women move five points clear on top of State League 1’s table.
The goal scorers were Sikic, Houghton, Hubeek and Sawa with two.
The Senior Women are away this week to Kings Domain, who are chasing their first win of the season.
