A 30-year-old employee of the Carrefour supermarket in Assago has died; a yet unidentified assailant having attacked numerous people in the store.
Pablo Mari, a football player currently on loan from Arsenal, was among those injured.
Police have detained a 46-year-old suspect, also stating that terrorist motives have been ruled out.
Reportedly the attacker, who began stabbing people at random at roughly 18:30 local time in a local shopping centre, has mental health issues.
Reports say screams were heard all throughout the centre, as frightened shoppers attempted to flee, panicked.
The attacker was reportedly detained by a handful of customers in the store before being handed over to police when they arrived at the scene.
29-year-old Spaniard footballer Mari has sustained a stab wound to the back, however thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening.
Adriano Galliani, the CEO of Monza, told Sky Italy that Mari was shopping with his wife and small child when the incident occurred.
"He had his son in a trolley and his wife next to him. He didn't notice anything. He then felt something painful in his back, which was the criminal's knife," Mr Galliani said.
"Unfortunately, he also saw the criminal stab someone in the throat. He saw everything that happened and it was deeply disturbing," Galliani continued.
Galliani also said that though the defender has suffered a substantially deep wound to his back, that the attacker’s knife missed his vital organs, and that he will hopefully make a speedy recovery.
Mari joined Arsenal, coming from Brazilian team Flamengo in January 2020.
He has only played 19 matches for Arsenal, currently on loan to Italian club Monza.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager said:
"I just found out. I know Edu (Arsenal’s technical director) has been in touch with his relatives. He's in hospital but he seems to be okay."
