The home side dominated possession with 71 per cent of the ball. They also created an impressive 15 shots on goal to Ascoli’s two which were both off target.
Gennaro Tutino put Cosenza ahead in the 20th minute with a penalty awarded for a handball, sending Emiliano Viviano the wrong way.
In the 36th minute, Nicola Falasco was given his second yellow card for elbowing Tutino in the face.
Five minutes later, things got worse for Ascoli when Marcel Buchel was shown a straight red for his rash challenge on Christian D’Urso as last man.
Four minutes into first half stoppage time saw the visitors go down to eight men, when Francesco Forte was also shown a straight red for striking Alessandro Fontanarosa in the back of the head away from the action.
Cosenza took advantage of their numbers nine minutes into the second half, when Alessandro Arioli volleyed D’Urso’s back-post cross low into the far post.
The home side made it 3-0 seven minutes later when Massimo Zilli was in the right spot as Viviano parried a shot directly into his path, leaving him with a simple close-range finish.
Ascoli would be concerned about their toxic start to the campaign.
