The 24-year-old arrived in Rome on Saturday for a medical and is set to move on a €30-million deal, including five million linked to bonuses.

The Bergamo side have money to spend after selling Denmark forward Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for around €75 million  plus 10 million in performance-related add-ons.

They are using it to put together what looks to be a highly competitive squad.

They have also signed Mali striker El Bilal Touré from Spanish side Almeria for around €31 million.

Scamacca’ signing is quite a coup for Atalanta, given several Italian sides, including giants Roma as well as Inter, were interested in signing the young striker.

The wide interest is a little surprising, given in the past year he has spent at West Ham, Scamacca has struggled to make an impression, scoring just three times across 16 appearances in the Premier League before a knee injury and a meniscus problem prematurely ended his season.

The east London club reportedly also have a 10 per cent sell on clause included in the Atalanta transaction, but will ultimately make a loss on the deal after they signed the forward for almost €35m from Sassuolo last summer.

Cronache di Spogliatoio last week quoted Scamacca as saying: “A lot of people continue to see me as a talent that’s yet to express itself”.

“I know that, 100 per cent, whoever signs me is going to be getting a deal.

“I think I just need to be in the right place at the right time.”
