On Wednesday night, Australia joined in the initiative, with over 80 sites across the nation lighting up to pay tribute to the workers.

Both rural and metropolitan communities took part in the event to thank doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers risking their lives to save the lives of others during the crisis.

Perth Concert Hall and Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital were among the many locations lit up by messages of thanks and praise.

Hundreds of people also participated in the tribute, lighting up their own homes.

Overseas, iconic locations such as Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and even the pyramids of Egypt were illuminated with colourful lights and messages of support.
