Luckily, the acid or acidic disinfectant accidentally put in the christening water was so highly diluted that the eight-month-old girl was discharged from hospital after minor treatment, said the Gazzetta del Sud.

It said the acid was probably in a cleaning fluid used before the ceremony at Villafranca Tirrena, a hamlet outside Messina.

One of the little girl's uncles felt a burning sensation during the baptism and then the parents saw that parts of her head and neck had turned red, the Gazzetta reported.

She was rushed to the Policlinico di Messina Hospital where doctors soon established she had not suffered serious injuries and could go home.
