Whether it is driven by social media postings of stars such as Britney Spears and Emily Ratajkowski, or simply convenience and setting, the town’s latest craze of barefoot bikini dancing in beach bars, has split the city council in the Emilia Romagna resort city and been a heated talking point in recent weeks.
While tourists are driving the minimal clothing option on the dancefloor, lifeguards and night venues are demanding authorities clamp down on it.
The dancing craze, in the bars and eateries known as ‘chiringuitos’, is backed by former deputy mayor Gloria Lisi, who has urged the council to formally approve what is already de facto happening.
But tourism councillor Juri Magrini has turned her down, saying “the beach can’t become a disco, there are norms forbidding it”.
Mayor Jamil Sadegholvaad, in contrast, has come out in favour of allowing people to dance in their bathing costumes, but insisted “there must be rules”.
Lifeguards and discos are also demanding “more rules and controls”, associations said.
