La Strega are now bottom of the table with only six games remaining, five points from the relegation playoff zone and seven from outright safety.

The visitors could have gone ahead earlier when Meccariello’s bottom corner shot from just outside the box was met with a fine save from Paleari, who got down to the ball quickly.

SPAL did eventually go ahead when Prati’s low half volley from outside the box went through a sea of legs. Paleari saw it late, but his despairing dive attempt wasn’t enough.

Benevento levelled just four minutes later, when a quick short corner found its way to Foulon 20 yards out.

The Belgian steadied with one touch, then blasted the ball goalward as it took a touch off a defender and sailed into the top corner.

Six minutes after the break, SPAL took the lead again after Maistro’s shot was blocked by Veseli into the path of Celia, who just had to finish from a tight angle as a scrambling Paleari tried to get back after having dived to save the initial shot.

SPAL sealed the game in the 66th minute with a diving header from Moncini, who didn’t celebrate out of respect for his former club.

SPAL have moved up to 18th while Benevento remain bottom.
