Silvio Berlusconi is set to be discharged within the next 48 hours from the Milan hospital where he was taken on April 5.

He was taken there to treat a lung infection that sprang up as part of a previously undisclosed chronic leukemia he has been suffering from for the last two years, sources at the San Raffaele Hospital said Tuesday.

The next medical bulletin on the 86-year-old three-time ex-prime minister and media mogul is expected Wednesday, the sources said.

They added that Berlusconi, whose condition has been steadily improving over the last two weeks, will probably be released on Wednesday or Thursday.

The centre-right Forza Italia (FI) leader, who had a heart operation in 2016 and who has been in and out of hospital with COVID and long COVID over the last two years, said he is heartened by all the messages of support and affection he has received over the last month.
