Bologna had 55 per cent possession as both sides created 11 scoring opportunities.
The opening goal came in the 19th minute when a ball sent to the back post found Lewis Ferguson, who finished from point blank range.
Three minutes later and it was 2-0 thanks to an incredible header from outside the box by Lorenzo De Silvestri.
Frosinone got one back in the second half when Matias Soule scored a penalty awarded for a clumsy foul in the box, but it wasn’t enough.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors in extra time when Luca Mazzitelli received a second yellow card.
