With possession roughly equal, the home side were far superior in terms of chances created.
Cagliari managed 16 shots on goal (eight on target) to Ascoli’s four (two on target).
It was the visitors who took the lead in the 19th minute after Francesco Forte got on the end Collocolo’s low cross, beating Cagliari keeper Radunovic at the near post.
After trailing at the break, Cagliari’s second half was an utter demolition.
Gianluca Lapadula scored in the 56th minute after Cagliari were awarded a penalty for a trip in the box.
His shot down the middle was initially saved by the feet of a diving Radunovic, allowing Lapadula to put the rebound into an empty net.
Marco Mancosu made it 2-1 five minutes later after a nice one-two with Lapadula ended with a shot just inside the right post.
Lapadula got his brace in the 84th minute after heading home a brilliant cross by Paulo Azzi on the left.
Four minutes later, Gabriele Zappa sealed Cagliari’s win by intercepting a poor defensive pass within Ascoli’s own box, before side-footing it into the back of the net from close range.
The loss leaves 5 points outside the play off zone, while Cagliari are 7th and on equal points with 5th and 6th.
