Nicola Fratoianni of the Italian Left (SI) and Angelo Bonelli of the Green Europe (EV) parties decided not to go ahead with a meeting scheduled by Democratic Party leader Enrico Letta.
Fratoianni and Bonelli asked for a meeting to assess whether an alliance would still be viable after Letta made a pact with the centrist Azione party, headed by Carlo Calenda.
Calenda has publicly stated that a potential centre-left government should continue with the policies adopted by outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Fratoianni and Bonelli expressed “unease” after the pact was made official and stated that they needed time for “more reflection” before meeting with Letta.
The Democratic Party and Azione alliance was made in the hope of boosting the centre-left’s unlikely chance of beating the right-wing coalition.
The Democratic Party has been polled as a close second to Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party, which is expected to win the upcoming election on September 25.
After the Five Star Movement’s involvement in dissolving Draghi’s coalition, Letta has ruled out an alliance with the political party.
