Sampdoria went ahead just before the break when Antonio La Gumina turned his man in the box and beat the keeper with a low shot.
Cittadella had their equalised three minutes after halftime when Andrea Magrassi hit Lorenzo Carissoni’s cross from close range before it bounced, leaving Filip Stankovic with little chance of saving it.
The winning goal came in the 66th minute when Simone Branca’s wonderful volley from outside the box sailed into the far post.
Cittadella are in seventh after five games.
