The total death toll in Italy now stands at 631, while 10,149 people have been infected in just over two weeks.

This figure includes the deceased and 1004 people who have now recovered, bringing the total number of active cases in Italy to 8515.

The number of patients in intensive care rose by 144, to a total of 877 nationwide.

The northern region of Lombardy has seen most of the deaths with 468 in total as of Tuesday.

Nearby Emilia-Romagna has had 85 fatalities and Veneto in the north east has had 26.

Some 11 Italian regions have now recorded deaths linked to coronavirus, most of them in the north.

All 20 regions have confirmed cases of the virus.

With the rapid spread of the coronavirus, the Italian government on Tuesday morning implemented nationwide quarantine measures to control the spread of the virus.

These included a ban on public gatherings, the suspension of all sporting events, the closure of cinemas and tourist attractions, and strict travel restrictions until April 3.

Meanwhile, neighbouring countries stepped up security measures, with Austria imposing border restrictions with Italy and the Slovenia announcing it had close the border completely.

“I have given orders to the Foreign Ministry and the Domestic Affairs Ministry to close the border with Italy following Austria’s move,” Slovenia’s outgoing Prime Minister Marjan Sarec said on Twitter.

Italy’s health system has severely strained by the outbreak and officials warned over the weekend that hospitals in the northern Lombardy region around Milan, where three-quarters of the deaths have occurred, were running out of beds.

Authorities are concerned that hospitals in the poorer regions in the south would struggle to cope if the outbreak worsened there.

For overwhelming majority of the fatalities and infections are still being recorded in the north, with southern regions largely spared.
