Cycling: Trentin to captain Italy at worlds

Italy coach Daniele Bennati has named his squad for the cycling world championships in Glasgow, with 33-year-old sprinter and classics specialist Matteo Trentin named as captain for Sunday’s men’s road race.

The other members of the road-race team are Andrea Bagioli, Filippo Baroncini, Alberto Bettiol, Daniel Oss, Andrea Pasqualon, Lorenzo Rota, Kristian Sbaragli and Simone Velasco.

Filippo Ganna, meanwhile, will seek to win the time-trial world title for the third time on Friday.

The 27-year-old, who is also a track cycling Olympic gold medallist and multiple world champion, won the event in 2020 and 2021.

“We are not starting out as favourites, but anything can happen in a one-day race,” said Bennati.

“Italy has a great tradition at the world championships. The goal is to win.”
