More than 600 people were evacuated from their homes when the major motorway bridge collapsed, over fears about the stability of remaining sections of the structure.

The residents who returned to their homes for the first time since the tragedy occurred on August 14, were allocated time slots and given two hours to gather their possessions.

They were accompanied by firefighters for safety reasons.

Each household was given 50 boxes to put their personal items in, while many residents also brought suitcases with them.

Giusy Moretti, the spokesperson of the evacuees’ committee, said that residents were not allowed enough time to collect their possessions, adding that two hours was better than nothing after months of displacement.

“I have a list of things to get and I already know that it won’t be respected,” she told Italian news agency ANSA.

“It’s the best we’ve been able to get... we will be able to return on other occasions.”

The Morandi bridge collapse claimed the lives of 43 people.
