The court and the political opposition have slammed the government’s move, in a public-administration decree, to strip the auditors of concurrent oversight powers, only leaving them with subsequent control powers.
“The left is very much in trouble. It is saying that there is an authoritarian drift on the Court of Auditors if you extend the rules of the Draghi government,” Meloni told the Quarta Repubblica news programme on Berlusconi-owned channel Retequattro.
“That is a problem.
“I summarily observe that we are doing what the previous government did.
“They say there is an authoritarian drift on the Court of Auditors which continues to do the checks and the six-monthly report.
“No one has put a gag on it.”
