Sources said it was the last week of the shoot on the film Lucca Mortis.

In the film, which also stars Helen Hunt and Laura Morante, 86-year-old Hoffman plays a writer taking a sabbatical to visit the northern Tuscan city.

Greenaway is best known for The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982), A Zed & Two Noughts (1985), The Belly of an Architect (1987), Drowning by Numbers (1988) and his most successful film, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), as well as Prospero’s Books (1991).

Greenaway has said Lucca Mortis “is the story of an intelligent man whose last big adventure is very likely to be death, but death through what we may call ‘natural causes’, if any cause can be described as natural”.

“He wants to make his death elegant and sensible, fearless and forthright,” said the 82-year-old Newport (Wales) born director.
