Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro won the 68th Sanremo Music Festival with their number entitled ‘Non mi Avete Fatto Niente’.
The pair said the winning song was inspired by the Manchester Arena bombing last May, in which 22 people were killed when a man blew himself up at an Ariana Grande concert.
The song, whose title translates as “You didn’t do anything to me”, will represent Italy at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Portugal, as is tradition.
Though Mr Meta and Mr Moro will fly the musical flag for Italy at the contest in May, only one-half of the duet is Italian.
While Fabrizio Moro is Roman, Ermal Meta was born in Albania and spent his early years there before his family moved to Bari, in Puglia, when he was 13 years old.
This year’s edition of Sanremo was a great success, with millions tuning in to RAI 1 every night, including on Saturday, when 12.125 million people watched the final evening.
Due to the event’s resounding success, there is speculation that singer-songwriter Claudio Baglioni may be called back to host the 2019 festival after doing so well this year.
