Passengers have been asked to contact their airline before going to the airport, with some flights cancelled and others diverted to different airports.
It is the latest in a series of recent eruptions by Europe’s tallest active volcano.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said this bout of activity was intense and estimated that the cloud of ash went up eight kilometres.
