The home team had only 40 per cent of the ball and created six chances to Bologna’s nine.
Fiorentina went ahead in the 17th minute when Giacomo Bonaventura’s shot on the spin went into the top-right corner, hitting the underside of the crossbar before going in.
Twelve minutes before the break saw Bologna equalise thanks to a penalty awarded for handball.
Joshua Zirkzee stepped up to the spot and hit it low and to the right as Pietro Terracciano dived the wrong way.
Bologna thought they had the lead just before halftime, but Riccardo Orsolini’s well-taken goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.
The home side restored their lead just after the break with a penalty of their own, awarded for a tug on the shirt of Jonathan Ikone.
Nicolas Gonzalez made no mistake, cooly slotting it low and to the left.
Fiorentina are in sixth on the table, two points above Bologna in eighth.
