A bulletin from Rome's Gemelli Hospital has confirmed that the operation was a "complete success".
The stent was inserted by head of the cardiovascular science department, Prof. Filippo Crea, and his team.
Mr Gentiloni, who felt slightly ill while flying from Paris to Rome on Tuesday, is expected to be laid up for a few days to fully recover.
The premier took to social media following the operation, tweeting "Thank you for your affection and well wishes. Doctors and medical staff very good. I'm well. I'll soon be back at work".
