Seven hundred and seventy-four folders and 318 registers to a total of 7871 files recording the history of the shattered Lazio mountain town were saved.

The oldest documents date back to the 18th century, as earthquakes in 1639 and 1703 had already destroyed earlier records.

The documents have been transferred to the state archive in nearby Rieti for reconditioning and, if necessary, restoration.

"Thanks to timely intervention by the culture ministry, we've been able to save a significant documentary heritage in its entirety," Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said.

"This will prevent Amatrice from suffering not just the earthquake devastation but also the erasure of its historical memory."

Restorers from the Central Institute for the Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Library Heritage, fire fighters and members of the carabinieri police and state forestry corps also took part in the recovery operation.
