Fadoi said one in three doctors is on leave, leading to a reduction of 52.7 per cent in outpatient activity.
In 15 per cent of cases outpatient departments will be closed entirely, it added.
The extreme heat Italy is currently enduring was also reported to be compounding the difficulties, Fadoi said.
The federation added that in order to compensate almost half of doctors not on leave take on additional work and half skip their weekly rest.
“Over 91 percent of doctors go on holiday between June and September, who take advantage of the 15 days of vacation in the summer period, as guaranteed by the national employment contract,” a statement from Fadoi said.
“This leads to a reduction in the number of personnel in the ward which varies between 21 and 30 per cent in 48 per cent of cases, between 30 and 50 in 19.4 per cent, while the shortage is between 11 and 20 in another 21.8 per cent.”
“In Lazio [due to staffing shortfalls] the activity of outpatient clinics drops by 72 per cent, in Emilia-Romagna by 63 per cent, in Campania by 42.2 per cent and in Umbria by 25 per cent," the statement said.
“In Puglia, one out of three clinics is closed. In Abruzzo, workloads increase by 80 per cent for doctors on duty, in Veneto, according to research, the quality of health care “is compromised in 60 per cent of cases”.
