Communal singalongs have taken place across the entire country, from Rome and Turin to Naples and Cagliari.

Most of the songs were Italian but in Turin, people danced on their balconies to the Macarena.

Italy has been under total lockdown since last week, as the government tries to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible, and a form is required for those who need to venture beyond their homes.

The only valid reasons for going outdoors are to go to work, buy food or collect medicines from a pharmacy.

Going for a short walk or a run is allowed but people are ordered to stay at least a metre away from each other.

Streets have been eerily quiet across Italian towns and cities, particularly at night, under the new quarantine measures.

The silence has proven too much for many Italians, and impromptu singalongs in streets across the nation have gone viral on social media.

A “musical flashmob” was organised in Rome on Friday night, when residents were invited to sing and and shout from their windows and balconies at 6:00 pm.

Many families with children home from school have also made banners bearing the slogan andrà tutto bene, meaning “everything will be alright”, and hung them from windows and balconies.

Other efforts have focused on fundraising, particularly to support hospitals in southern Italy who are now racing against time to prepare for potential outbreaks in the poorer regions.

One appeal to fund equipment for a hospital in Sicily had raised more than €50,000 on Friday, while a similar appeal in Naples has raised more than €500,000.

Some hospitals are also launching their own official fundrasing campaigns, such as Rome’s Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases.

Meanwhile, many residents across Italy have set up groups of volunteers delivering food and medicine to the elderly, after the government ordered all those aged over 75 to stay indoors as a precaution.

The Italian Red Cross are also delivering food and medicine to those in need.
