For Palm Sunday, the Italian community of Griffith in NSW sent their counterparts in Melbourne dozens of olive branches as a sign of friendship and solidarity.
The olive branches came from the property of Valentino Valentini in Yoogali and were transported to Melbourne by Riverina Nursery.
They were blessed by Father Luciano Rocchi during Palm Sunday Mass.
Many faithfuls also took part in the parish’s re-enactment of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday.
Fifteen large loaves of bread adorned with the shape of a crown were blessed and distributed as a sign of unity.
The Last Supper was hosted by the Vadalà family, who hail from Calabria and reside in Thornbury.
Mr and Mrs Vadalà have 12 children and a staggering 40 grandchildren.
The Last Supper was served in a large bread basket decorated with red and white carnations.
Meanwhile, Good Friday was marked by the narration of the Passion of Christ.
The week culminated in the joyous celebrations of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
