The news was widely expected as the 42-year-old former Sweden forward, who retired as a player in June, had reportedly been in talks for weeks about a new position with RedBird chief Gerry Cardinale.

In a statement, RedBird said Ibrahimovic was returning to “strengthen the winning culture” of the club.

It said Ibrahimovic “will collaborate with the club’s global investment team” and “play the role of senior advisor to the ownership”.

It said he would have an “active role in sporting and commercial operations” and be in charge of “player development and training for high performance” along with involvement in special projects, such as the club’s plans for a new stadium.

Ibrahimovic won two Serie A titles during two separate stints at Milan, between 2010 and 2012, and 2020 and 2023.

“My love for the Rossoneri will never end and the opportunity to be part of their future in a meaningful way is something I could only dream of,” he said.

“I am grateful to Gerry Cardinale for giving me this opportunity.

“This is not a decision I take lightly. I have thought long and hard about the first steps of my career after playing football, and I couldn’t be more excited to start this journey as a member of RedBird and AC Milan.

“For me and my family, this is truly a homecoming.”

Ibra won 34 trophies during his illustrious playing career.
