But before then, Nero will bring muggy ‘afa’ days and tropical ‘afa’ nights to Italy, with temperatures hitting records in the north and centre and staying a bit lower in the south.

Florence will see 40 degrees Celsius, Grosseto 39 degrees; Ferrana, Rome, Naples and Viterbo 38 degrees; Aosta, Bolzano, Milan, Turino and Verona 37 degrees and Bergamo, Bologna, Foggia and Padua 36 degrees; while the south will have slightly lower highs.

 “The extremely hot air from the Sahara desert is invading a large swathe of the Old Continent pushing temperatures above seasonal averages by 10-12°C, like in France and Germany,” Sanò said.

The intense daytime heat will be followed by tropical nights with temps hovering around 22-23 degrees, he said.

Some 17 cities are on red heat alert Wednesday and will stay that way until Sunday.

This means even the young, fit and healthy are told to stay out of the sun between 10am and 6pm.
