As of today, people who have resided abroad for nine of the last 10 years and opt to move to Italy can activate a flat tax rate of 100,000 euros a year.

According to details of the measure, the tax rate would be renewable every year for a maximum of 15 years, while a further 25,000 euros per person would also be added to the tax rate of those who arrange Italian residency for immediate family members.

The proposal only applies to individuals who are considered Italian residents for tax purposes, which is only possible if they reside in Italy for more than 183 days.

Local authorities have estimated that the new flat tax could be taken up by thousands of people who have sufficient income to consider the option.
