The recipient of the coveted annual award is decided by the French association Les Grandes Tables du Monde.
Born in the Sicilian town of Gaggi, Amato began baking when he was nine years old.
Having honed his skills and learnt the secrets of the trade, he undertook several internships before working in prestigious hotels, both in Italy and abroad.
During a six-month stint in London, he worked at the three-Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse restaurant.
In 2004, he began working at the three-Michelin-starred Rome restaurant La Pergola, under the guidance of Heinz Beck, one of the most revered chefs in the world.
Seventeen years later, Amato tours the globe showcasing his incredible skills and knowledge.
Upon accepting the award, Amato thanked Beck for his guidance over the years.
“He’s always believed in me and continues to do so 17 years on,” Amato said.
The pastry chef also thanked his wife and children for their support.
