The man, who was not immediately identified, was stabbed and died in hospital.
Catalan police said they were called to a fight between two men at calle Princep de Viana, in the working-class Raval district, at around 4:30 am.
The wounded man was rushed to Barcelona’s Hospital del Mer, where he died in the afternoon.
Catalan police have opened an investigation into the murder and Italian consular officials are reportedly in touch with the man’s family.
According to local sources, the fight may have been linked to drugs.
