Italo-German ‘contacts’ to solve migrant row - sources

A number of contacts are being made between Germany and Italy to resolve a row over migrants after Rome accused Berlin of funding migrant rescue NGOs and not taking the migrants to Germany, instead taking them to Italy, well-placed sources said Monday.

Germany funds 10 of the 19 NGOs operating in the central Mediterranean and Italy has accused Germany of hypocrisy in allegedly facilitating migration to Italy while closing its own eastern borders to migrants.

According to the sources, discussions are underway at a technical level to find a solution to the impasse on migrants after the clash over the amendments on NGOs.

There are “various ideas” on the table and they are working “to find a meeting point”, in view of the Granada summits - the European Political Community meeting on the 5th and the informal EU Council on the 6th.

At the moment, diplomatic sources explained, there are no plans for a bilateral between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which will depend on the progress of the technical contacts underway.
