With the sprint relay team winning the 4x100m for Italy’s 11th gold medal of the tournament, the Azzurri took their position at the top of the medals table.
After retaining his individual European 100m title on Saturday, Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs won gold again in the relay with Matteo Melluzzo, Lorenzo Patta and Filippo Tortu in a time of 37.82 seconds.
On Wednesday, Italy also took silver in the men’s 4x400 relay and in the women’s long jump thanks to Larissa Iapichino.
Pietro Arese won bronze in the men’s 1500 metres.
Italy ended the European Athletics Championships with 24 medals: 11 gold, nine silver and four bronze.
This comes after the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, held in 2021 due to the pandemic, where Italy accomplished their best ever Olympic medal tally.
Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) President Giovanni Malagò said on Thursday that Italy is looking to maintain this form heading into this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris.
“In Paris, we not only want to, but can break the Tokyo record,” said Malagò.
“We want to stay in the world top ten and remain the leading nation in Europe.”
