“Monza brought good luck last year,” Meloni said, apparently referring to the 2022 race taking place shortly before the victory of her centre-right coalition in last year’s general election.

“We will need even more luck this year.

“The situation is difficult to handle, but this temple of speed can become a source of inspiration for us because we need to go faster to make this nation go faster.”

Speaking of faster, Red Bull’s Formula One world champion and runaway standings leader Max Verstappen won at Monza on Sunday to romp to his 10 consecutive victory.

The Dutchman headed a Red Bull one-two with Sergio Perez coming second.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz held off a late challenge from his team mate Charles Leclerc to finish third and secure a place on the podium.

Spain’s Sainz started in pole position and did well to hold off Verstappen until the 14th lap and Perez until the 46st given the Red Bulls’ superior pace.

“I never would have believed this (winning 10 consecutive races) was possible,” Verstappen said.

“Today they made me sweat for it.

“The Ferrari had a lot of top speed and it was hard to overtake, so I had to force Sainz to make a mistake, which I got on turn one when he locked up.”

To say Verstappen is not particularly popular with Ferrari fans, is something of an understatement.

The supporters leapt up and down and chanted “those who don’t jump are Red Bull supporters”.
