Another 3039 people tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, the lowest daily jump since March 13.

The daily infection rate reached a new low of just 2.3 per cent, Italy’s Civil Protection agency stated.

The number of patients in intensive care also dropped by 106 to 3792 on Tuesday, offering more breathing space to overworked hospitals.

Meanwhile, 1555 patients recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours, with recoveries rising to a total of over 24,000.

There were 604 new deaths reported on Tuesday.

In total, 17,127 lives have now been lost to the virus in Italy, and there have been 135,586 cases in total since the outbreak began, according to official figures.

Italy’s nationwide lockdown is in place until at least April 13 as the country continues to battle the virus.
