The two centrist groups stood together at the 2022 Italian election and won over 7 per cent of the vote.
But Renzi said they will go their own ways at next year’s European elections.
‘Today we make separation from our friends in Azione official,” said Renzi.
“We tried up till the end to ask them to form an election list together [for the European elections], but Calenda’s response was scornful.
“Everyone has their own style, and we won’t make a row about it, so best wishes to everyone and each one of us takes his own road.
“It is better to end this soap opera than to have half of Italy laughing at us.”
He added that he was “certain” his party would “achieve a great result” at the European elections.
