The festival will also screen Halloween Kills – starring Curtis and directed by David Gordon Green – ahead of its general release in October.
The movie is the latest instalment in the series of horror movies that launched Curtis’ career in 1978 when she played babysitter Laurie Strode, who faced off serial killer Michael Myers in John Carpenter’s cult classic Halloween.
Curtis, 62, has reprised the role of Laurie several times and is also known internationally for her acting in films such as Trading Places (1983), A Fish Called Wanda (1988), Blue Steel (1990) True Lies (1994), The Tailor of Panama (2001), Freaky Friday (2003), Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008), You Again (2010), Veronica Mars (2014) and Knives Out (2019).
The award-winning actor said she was “incredibly humbled" to receive a Golden Lion award.
“Italian Cinema has always honoured and heralded the genre that gave me my career, so I couldn’t be more proud and happy to accept this award ... on behalf of Laurie and all the courageous heroines of the world who stand tall in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and refuse to yield,” she added.
The 78th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will be held from September 1 to 11, 2021.
