Italy’s national fire service, the Vigili del Fuoco, said a locomotive and front carriage had derailed on the train line between Venice and Trieste at around 6:00 pm.

The train was travelling near Bivio di Aurisina with 22 passengers on board when it hit the boulders and derailed.

Firefighters attended the scene and helped people off the train through its rear doors.

Nobody was injured in the incident, according to officials.

Riccardo Riccardi, the vice president of the regional government of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, praised the work of firefighters and volunteers on Twitter.

“For the transhipment operations, thanks to the firefighters and the volunteers of the civil protection agency, who immediately took action to support the passengers on board, all fortunately unharmed,” he wrote.

Rail traffic was suspended throughout the area, with interruptions continuing into Tuesday, according to local media.

Passengers on affected trains were transported via taxi, as the coronavirus pandemic made it difficult to organise bus replacements, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
