The piece was on show at Rome’s Palazzo Bonaparte last November.

The Van Gogh piece, The Sower, was not damaged as it was behind a glass sheet.

The trial has been set for October 12 before a single judge.

The four defendants risk three years in jail for damaging property.

According to the indictment, the activists were “in conspiracy with each other and in concert soiled, by throwing a sweep of vegetables, the painting”.

They are also accused of “drawing on its protective glass, frame and the exhibition panel on which the painting was affixed”.

Meanwhile, the Capitoline magistrates are awaiting communications from the Superintendency regarding the recent stunt pulled at the Barcaccia fountain to assess the possible charge of defacement or damage.

The fountain was infused with black liquid on April 1 during a protest carried out by another group of activists.
