Roma had 59 per cent possession as both sides created 17 shots on goal. Incredibly, only one of Bilbao’s shots were off target.
The home side should have hit the lead five minutes before the break, but Paulo Dybala’s shot from inside the box hit the crossbar.
But it was Bilbao who broke the deadlock in the 50th minute as Inaki Williams finished off a set piece play with a header at the back post.
It took Roma just five minutes to respond as Angelino finished off a square ball into the box by Zeki Celik that hit the post on the way in.
Things were made difficult for Bilbao in the 85th minute as Yeray Alvarez received a second yellow card for dragging Dybala, who had gotten goal side of him, down to the ground.
In dramatic fashion, Eldor Shomurodov scored the winning goal for Roma in, quite literally, the last second of the match. With three minutes of added time to play, his shot on the turn crossed the line as the clock hit 93 minutes exactly.
Roma now go to Spain with a lead to protect.
