The home side took the lead in under four minutes when Francesco Caputo put away a penalty awarded for a push in the box.

Andrea Pinamonti equalised for the visitors in under eight minutes with a header from a corner.

Matheus Henrique put Sassuolo ahead in the 22nd minute with a header of his own, taking advantage of the inch-perfect cross by Jeremy Toljan.

Jacopo Fazzini made it 2-2 on the half-hour mark with a low shot from outside the box after forcing a turnover.

In the 66th minute, Juve-bound Domenico Berardi scored a penalty awarded for an unnecessary slide tackle by Matteo Cancellieri that only caught the player.

Viktor Kovalenko looked to have rescued a point for Empoli in the 86th minute with a volley after teammate Emmanuel Gyasi’s shot fell to him via the crossbar.

Berardi spoiled the party for the home side in the 92nd minute with a volley of his own after a cross by Matias Vina found him at the back of the waiting pack.

Sassuolo are 13th, now five points above Empoli in 18th.
