The home side enjoyed 65 per cent possession and created 11 chances to Venezia’s eight.
However, it was the visitors who scored first as Magnus Kofod Andersen shot into the far post from a tightish angle inside the box in the 3rd minute.
Valentin Castellanos equalised for Lazio soon after when he disposed a dallying Michael Svoboda on the edge of the box.
Lazio made it 2-1 just before the break as Mattia Zaccagni scored a penalty awarded for a foul on Castellanos.
Castellanos went close to scoring again in the 55th, but his deflected shot was pushed onto the crossbar by Jesse Joronen.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors as Giorgio Altare deflected a low cross from Manuel Lazzari into his own net.
It was a reality check for Venezia, who need to clean up their individual errors quickly if they are to avoid going straight back down to Serie B.
