Domenico Berardi and Nikola Krstovic traded goals at the Stadio Via del Mare on Friday night.
Italian international forward Berardi converted a penalty for Sassuolo midway through the first half and Montenegrin strike Krstovic equalised after the break by slotting in a loose ball inside the area following a corner.
Berardi has five goals and Krstovic four so far this season.
Lecce are seventh with 12 points through eight rounds and Sassuolo are two points behind in ninth.
Sydney-born attacker, but Italian youth international, Cristian Volpato remained an unused substitute for the visitors. The 19-year-old who joined from Roma in the off-season has played just 49 minutes in league and cup since his move, and not at all since August 20.
Elsewhere, Empoli and Udinese drew 0-0 to leave both clubs on the edge of the relegation zone. The result could cost Udinese coach Andrea Sottil his job, with the Friuli club still winless.
