Rohrwacher's Le Pupille (The Pupils) was in the running in the Best Live Action Short category that was won by An Irish Goodbye by Tom Berkeley and Ross White.

Variety magazine described The Pupils as "a coming-of-age fable centred around innocence, greed and fantasy that follows rebellious little girls at a Catholic boarding school in the run-up to Christmas during an imaginary wartime".

Veteran Italian make-up artist Signoretti's team was nominated for its work on Baz Luhrmann's biopic Elvis.

But the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar went to Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley for their work on Darren Aronofsky's The Whale.

In the major award cateroies on the night, this year's Best Picture award went to Everything Everywhere All At Once, with its director Damiel Kwan winning Best Director and star Michelle Yeoh winning Best Actress.

Brendan Fraser won the Best Actor award for his lead role in The Whale, while Best Supporting Actor and Actress were won by Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis respectively for their outstanding performances in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
