It marked the first exhibition with a set theme in the Victorian capital.

The 250 works were photographed by 13 young artists – 11 from Melbourne, one from Perth and one from Sydney.

Many of the photographers are passionate amateurs and used basic equipment to take their shots; however, the fruit of their labour of love depicts artistic excellence.

For example, the above photo was developed and printed in the back room of a butcher’s shop.

It was taken spontaneously by John Bolton, a young mechanic from Elwood, and captures an Italian girl at the market.
