Meloni is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday during her first official visit to China since she took the helm of the Italian government in 2022.

“I am very happy to be here for this government’s first official trip, which has been preceded by several high-level meetings,” said Meloni.

“[This trip and the recent meetings are] a demonstration of the will to start a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation in the year that marks the 20th anniversary of our global strategic partnership.”

Meloni also announced “a three-year action plan to experiment new forms of cooperation”.

Meloni’s government last year pulled out of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, having been the only G7 country to sign up in 2019.

The Belt and Road Initiative is a huge infrastructure program that seeks to build of sort of modern-day Silk Road.
