Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore on Monday released the 2019 edition of its annual quality of life survey, naming Milan the best town or city to live in the country.
According to the survey, the worst place to live in Italy is the town of Caltanissetta, on the southern island of Sicily, which came last for the fourth time in the history of the ranking.
The study refers to criteria including wealth, security and environmental factors.
For the 30th anniversary of the ranking, the total number of indicators used to measure “quality of life” was increased from 48 to 90.
The study is divided into six different categories:
Wealth and consumption: Aosta, Milan, Trieste, Parma and Turin.
Environment and public services: Trento, Trieste, Bolzano, Nuoro and Milan.
Justice and security: Oristano, Treviso, Aosta, Bellino and Pordenone.
Business and Work: Milan, Trieste, Bolzano, Bologna and Rimini.
Demographics and Society: Bolzano, Brescia, Lodi, Monza and Brianza, and Verona.
Culture and Leisure: Rimini, Trieste, Milan, Venice and Aosta.
Many of the places that topped the rankings are located in northern or central Italy.
The top 10 towns or cities were: Milan, Bolzano, Trento, Aosta, Trieste, Monza and Brianza, Verona, Treviso, Venice and Parma.
The 10 worst places to live were all southern towns: Catania, Palermo, Isernia, Messina, Trapani, Agrigento, Vibo Valentia, Enna, Foggia, Crotone and Caltanissetta.
